How to care for quartz, granite and marble worktops

Everyday cleaning and the few things to avoid, surface by surface, so your worktops still look new in ten years.

Quartz

The easiest of the three. Wipe with warm soapy water or a mild household cleaner. Avoid anything strongly alkaline or acidic and avoid abrasive scourers. The one real rule: don't put hot pans directly on it โ€” the resin can discolour under high heat โ€” so always use a trivet. No sealing is ever needed.

Granite

Clean with warm water and a little washing-up liquid, or a cleaner made for stone. Avoid acidic cleaners like neat lemon or vinegar, which can dull the surface over time. Granite is sealed on installation; a simple water test (does water bead or soak in?) tells you when it's due a re-seal, typically every year or two depending on use.

Marble

The most characterful and the most demanding. Marble is softer and reacts to acids โ€” wine, citrus, tomato and vinegar can etch it if left, leaving dull marks. Wipe spills promptly, use boards and coasters, clean only with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, and keep it sealed. Many people come to love the way marble develops a lived-in patina; if you want it pristine forever, quartz is the safer choice.

General rules for all stone

Always use a chopping board โ€” knives will dull on stone and can scratch it. Use trivets for hot pans. Wipe spills sooner rather than later. Skip bleach and abrasive powders. Done consistently, these small habits keep a stone worktop looking new for decades.
